VFL Bochum’s Thomas Reis and Monza’s Giovanni Stroppa are the latest managerial casualties of the new season. The Bundesliga outfit’s decision to relieve Reis from the post came after six straight losses that left them bottom of the table without a point. “It should be clear to everyone that this decision is not easy for us,” said Bochum sports director Patrick Fabian. “Thomas Reis has a connection to the club and the city that goes beyond the successful past three years.” Reis, who was appointed in 2019, guided Bochum’s promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2020/21 season. U19 coach Heiko Butscher is set to take charge as interim coach.
The 48-year-old Reis is the second Bundesliga coach to be fired this season. Earlier, RB Leipzig sacked manager Domenico Tedesco after a 4-1 home thrashing by Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League group match opener. Former Borussia Dortmund manager Marco Rose took over as Tedesco’s replacement. Leipzig currently sit 10th in the domestic league table.
Meanwhile, hopes to survive the league by firing their coach early in the season. “AC Monza announces that it has relieved Giovanni Stroppa from the position of coach of the first team,” Monza said in a statement. “The club thanks the coach for the journey made together, culminating in the conquest of a historic promotion to Serie A, wishing him the best successes for the future.”
The 54-year-old coach propelled Monza to Serie A promotion for the first time in their history. The former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi owned club were promoted via the play-offs, the club’s highest achievement since Berlusconi bought the club in 2018 when it was still in the third tier. Berlusconi is the former owner of the current Serie A champions AC Milan.
During the transfer window, Stroppa pushed to sign the likes of Andrea Ranocchia, Stefano Sensi, Matteo Pessina and Alessio Cragno, players with extensive experience in the top division. However, after six games into their Serie A debut, they remain winless with only a point, conceding a league-high 14 goals. The club’s former youth team coach Raffaele Palladino is set to take charge of the team.
