The Philippine Women’s football team mentored by Alen Stajcic and led by the Filipina star in Serina Bolden began their World Cup build up last week, September 7 as they faced the highly ranked New Zealand held at the Titan Stadium inside the Cal State Fullerton Campus in California, USA. The Philippine Women’s football team made their noise in the world soccer scene when they stunned the Southeast rival in Thailand at group stage and beating Chinese Taipei at the quarterfinals of AFC Women’s Cup to earn a spot for 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and followed by their impressive 2022 AFF Campaign to clinch first title for the Philippines.

The first friendly match for Coach Alen Stajcic and his team was very impressive as they gave the World 22 ranked New Zealand a hard-fought battle in both half-times. The Filipinas drew first blood of the match after Serina Bolden’s goal at the 45+1’ minute marked with a brilliant assist from Sara Eggesvik to end the first half with momentum on the side of the Philippines.
The second half led us to the series of dominance by the New Zealand Ferns to turn the favor on their side. They leveled the score in the 71st minute via penalty kick by Meikayla Moore past the goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel. Through that penalty kick by Moore, the New Zealand successfully sustained the second half momentum that led to 82nd convincing goal by Aly Riley, the final dagger to send Filipinas on a defeat. The Filipinas tried to retrieve back from the game via Jessika Cowart’s late sniff attempt only for her kick to hit the post.
Despite this loss against New Zealand, Alen Stajcic is still confident and proud of his team’s effort to level up their gameplay and gave ranked teams like New Zealand a difficult and tough matchup. This match against the World Cup co-host is part of Philippine Women’s football team 13 day US training camp.
This is the first game of Filipinas since their championship game against Thailand for AFF Women’s Cup in Rizal Memorial Stadium. The Philippine Women’s football team also accomplished notable finishes in the 31st Southeast Asian Games held in Vietnam. They ended the 37 years drought of Sea Games medal drought of the Philippines in football as they defeated Myanmar in the bronze medal match, the best finish of the Philippines in Sea Games football. That victory of the Philippines against Myanmar served as exact revenge way back at the 2019 Sea Games held on Philippine turf. The football team last won the bronze medal way back 1985 in a three team single round-robin competition.
