Steve Davis will remain as Wolves’ interim head coach until 2023, the club have confirmed. Earlier, Wolves have sacked head coach Bruno Lage following a disappointing start to the season, leaving the soccer club in the danger zone with six points from eight matches. Davis took over the team after Lage was sacked. Davis along with James Collins worked with the Under-18 and Under-21 sides respectively.
“In the short time Steve and his team have been in interim charge of the first team, we have already seen improvements to the group, with the players responding well to their methods and the changes they have started to implement,” said Wolves chairman Jeff Shi. “We have complete faith in their ability and leadership to continue their roles into the World Cup break and new year.”
He added: “We have no plans to rush our search for a new permanent head coach and will not compromise in any way our approach to appointing the person we believe to be the perfect fit for our club, our squad and the role of head coach at Wolves.” The 57-year-old has a huge task of leading the pack to Premier League survival. Wolves sit 18th in the soccer table after another loss at home.
Notably, Wolves held talks with Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked by Sevilla. However, Lopetegui rejected the offer, citing family reasons. QPR boss Beale was also offered the job but declined. “Wolves are a fantastic football club and it was a real privilege to be asked to go and speak to them but I didn’t think it was the right moment because I entered into an agreement here,” Beale said.
Wolves also considered re-appointing Nuno Espírito Santo, who was open to return to the club after leaving in May 2021. It is also learnt that they have spoken to recently departed Lyon head coach Peter Bosz about the vacancy. However, they seemed to look for a different option. Former under-23s coach Rob Edwards and the former Olympiakos manager Pedro Martins were also said to be part of their list.
Following their recent loss to Leicester City 0-4, Wolves now level on points with bottom club Nottingham Forest. In an interview, Davis agreed that the team is in a relegation battle. “It’s very early in the season but it has to change. We can’t be saying this beyond the World Cup, we need to be getting points and get ourselves out of the bottom three and give everybody some hope,” he said.
