The Spain under -21 coach Luis de la Fuente filled the role. La Roja had a dominating start of their 2022 World Cup campaign by thrashing Costa Rica 7-0 but suffered a huge draw against Germany and a shocking defeat over Japan 2-1. They were the strong favorites to win the last 16 matchup against Morocco. However, things did not go on their plan as they suffered a huge defeat and were eliminated as they crashed out by Morocco on penalties. For betnumbers today prediction today click here!
“We would like to thank Luis Enrique and his entire coaching staff,” said the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
“The sports management of the RFEF has transferred to the president a report in which it is determined that a new project should start for the Spanish Soccer Team, with the aim of continuing with the growth achieved in recent years thanks to the work carried out by Luis Enrique and their collaborators. Both the president, Luis Rubiales, and the sports director, José Francisco Molina, have transmitted the decision to the coach.”
It’s no surprise to witness Luis Enrique let go of the Spain coaching job, he took the full responsibility for his team’s defeat over Morocco and he admitted after the match if he will continue being the coach. After the news, Spain confirmed that Luis de la Fuente will take-over the coaching job for La Roja.
“The new coach will make his debut in March for Euro 2024 qualifiers, taking charge of his first game against Norway and Scotland,” confirmed by RFEF in a statement.
“We dominated the game but we lacked a goal,” Luis Enrique told reporters after the match. “We could have been more effective in the final third, but I am more than satisfied with what my players did. They represented perfectly what my idea of football is.”
The last time La Roja lifted a prestigious trophy was in 2012 Euro, while they have not succeeded even a single knockout match at the World Cup since dominating the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Luis Enrique took over the coaching job in 2018 after another disappointing exit at the Russia World Cup and he immediately led Spain to the semi-finals of the Euro 2020.
Luis Enrique expresses his gratitude to Spain Football Federation in his farewell message on Instagram.
“What the national team needs is support, in all senses, so that Luis de la Fuente can achieve what he wants. To the players, who have been exemplary in their behavior and faithful to the idea put before them, I am sorry not to have been able to help you more,” he wrote, addressing his gratitude to fans, players, and staff.
