La Liga outfit Sevilla have announced that Julen Lopetegui has been relieved from his duties as the head coach just hours after the team’s Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund, their sixth defeat in 10 matches across all competitions. The 56-year-old, who was appointed as manager in June 2019, led the club to the Europa League title a year later. “The club wish to underline and thank the Basque coach for his professionalism and hard work in the more than three years he spent at the club, as well as wishing him the best of luck and the best of success in his future endeavors,” the club said in a statement. The team is currently sitting near the danger zone after just one win in seven games, losing 4 and drawing the other 2.
For three years at the helm, the former Spain and Real Madrid boss has made a lot of achievements in the team, including consecutive fourth-place finishes in the Spanish league and three consecutive Champions League qualifications. He also led the club to a record 77 points in La Liga in the 2020-21 season. They finished fourth last season despite holding the top spot for quite some time.
“It’s been three historic, spectacular years, with silverware and three consecutive qualifications for the Champions League,” an emotional Lopetegui said in his farewell press conference with Sevilla. “We haven’t started well this season and they’ve made a decision that I have to accept, even if it’s not to my liking.” Read more for sure win football predictions.
Jorge Sampaoli, who led Sevilla to a fourth-place finish in the 2016-17 season before leaving to take charge Argentina’s national team, makes his return to the Spanish league as Lopetegui’s replacement. The 62-year-old coach has signed a two-year deal with Sevilla. Sampaoli led Olympique Marseille second in the Ligue 1 table last season before leaving the French side due to disagreements with the board.
Meanwhile, Lopetegui were reportedly set to hold talks with Premier League side Wolves as the potential replacement of Bruno Lage, who sacked last weekend after a 2-0 defeat at West Ham United that left them in the relegation zone. Wolves previously eyed Lopetegui as coach when Fosun took control of the club in 2016. Nuno Espírito Santo got the job and led Wolves to promotion.
With Lopetegui now vacant and the club is actively looking for a new coach, Wolves may revive their interest in hiring the Spanish coach. If he finally agrees to go to Molineux, Lopetegui will be tasked to lift the team out of the danger zone and assure league survival. Wolves have won only one game in the last 15 matches they played since a 2-1 win over Aston Villa at Molineux in April.
