The Red-hot Samsonova
In an interview from a reliable news outlet, Samsonova was “shocked” when she found out that Russian tennis players are banned from participating in the June-July Wimbledon due to Russian invasion on Ukraine.
She uses the month-off tournaments to enhance and improve and sharpen her skills – she benefited from that laid off as she beat two strong opponents in Tokyo. She defeated Wimbledon Champion Elena Rybakina and Two-time Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza on her way to the Tokyo title.
“I said, OK, I have one month without tournaments, so let’s work this month,’ Samsonova said.
“I used it so well because I was working so hard. I had 32 days of just practicing, which is not normal at that time of the year for a tennis player.”
Samsonova also mentioned that she improved her mental strength and technique during her tournament break and it is very evident on her stint in WTA Tokyo.
“I was feeling great physically but I was feeling a little bit tired mentally,” Samsonova emphasized, she reached the Last 16 at this year’s US Open.
“I’m very happy how I managed today with the pressure — it’s unbelievable what I did today. All the week was really impressive and I’m really happy about my game.”
Samsonova is expecting a tight final match against the rising Zheng. China’s Zheng also had a notable match in this tournament as she ousted top-seeded Paula Badosa and she also junked No.4 seed Veronika Kudermetova before losing to the 23 year old Russian. Samsonova easily dispatched the 19 year old Chinese in a two set sweep 7-5, 7-5.
The 23 year old Russian is on the series of success by winning the Citi Open and Tennis in the Land. She thanks her series of success to the team around her:
“They’re helping me a lot with these kinds of things, how to be focused on every match, how to prepare every match with a different player, how to play a quarterfinal, a semifinal, everyday it’s different. So I’m glad to have my team,” she said.
