“I’m happy with the performance, I’m happy with the three points,” coach Lage said. “This three points goes straight to the fans because at the start of the game they were singing: “Bruno, Bruno Lage!” So I think they are happy with our performance, with the way the players are playing. I think it was a question of bringing results. Now it’s time to work.”
In the added time at the end of the poor first half, Podence scored the game’s only goal in stoppage time after connecting with Matheus Nunes’ low ball into the box to send a superb finish past Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu. Che Adams was denied a goal for an inexplicable handball, having missed the ball with his head from just yards out before hitting the bar with another header a few minutes later.
“When we speak about defeats, that hurt. This is one of the most hurting ones because the chances we had in the second half must be goals,” Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking about Adams’ chances. “Ché knows this but he did a fantastic job working for the team. It is really frustrating when you see that such a ball is going into the net [and] is not a goal.”
Meanwhile, Wolves’ £15 million signing Sasa Kalajdzic made his debut in Lage’s starting line-up at half-time— a fine replacement after a groin injury forced Raul Jimenez to be sidelined. However, Kalajdzic suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in this game. He was replaced by another summer signing Goncalo Guedes. Kalajdzic is likely to be out for the rest of a year according to reports.
“Sasa felt a pain in his knee late in the first half against Southampton. Unfortunately, scans reveal an anterior cruciate injury and he will see a knee specialist tomorrow. We now need to support Sasa in his recovery and further updates will follow,” Lage said. Kalajdzic scored six Bundesliga goals last season for Stuttgart. Wolves head to Liverpool on Saturday, while Southampton host Brentford.
