Hundreds killed during the stampede at Indonesia football match
*Warning: Disturbing details
Fans rushed onto exit the field as the Police released tear gas that caused panic, and a worse stampede that claimed hundreds of lives. The Police Officers defend the firing of tear gas as they are trying to control the riot rather it triggers a bloody chaos after fans rushed through the exit of the stadium causing panics, suffocations, and stampede where many are trampled to death.
Human Rights Organizations are condemning this act of using tear gas as an instrument to control the chaos. The use of tear gas is prohibited by FIFA. “The excessive use of force through the use of tear gas and inappropriate crowd control was the cause of the large number of fatalities,” a statement from Indonesia’s Legal Aid Foundation.
There is also a report that there was an over capacity. The stadium holds only 38,000 fans but the legal soccer committee printed 42,000 tickets – which is a major factor in a deadly stampede. Soccer violence has been a long problem in Indonesia. President Joko Widodo addressed the people in the aftermath of the stampede and ordered an investigation and commanded the country’s football association to suspend all football matches until “security improvements” occurred.
“I deeply regret this tragedy and (I) hope this football tragedy will be the last in our country,” Widodo emphasized.
