The Tokyo Olympic Champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark was replaced as world no.1 by Indian badminton player HS Prannoy in the latest BWF World Tour 2022 Men’s Singles Rankings. His fellow Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen also landed ninth while PV Sindhu regressed to No. 2.
Prannoy started his winning year last May when he helped the Indian squad to win their Thomas Cup title. He currently participates in almost 13 tournaments on the BWF World Tour and is now leading the rankings with 58, 090 points.
He produced best performances this season including his stint in the Swiss Open BWF Super 300 event where he reached the finals, he also made it to the semifinals in Malaysia Masters Super 500 and in the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournaments to accumulate ranking points as possible.
It is important to note that the BWF World tour ranking is different from the Official Badminton World Ranking where Prannoy currently holds 18th place. Despite the Indian Ace shuttler having somehow a not-so decorative season, his stints in every tournament are worth noting as he made an impression despite most of these not resulting in a podium finish. Prannoy started his 2022 campaign with a quarterfinal finish in Indian Open 2022 held last January. He also earned another quarterfinal output in Syed Modi International also held in January. In the German Open last March, he also had a quarterfinal finish. Following that German Open campaign, he suffered a devastating first round exit in the All England Open. Prannoy made an impressive comeback when he accomplished a runner-up finish, losing to Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in the finals.
In Korea Open 2022, he faced another first round exit held in early-April. The same result also happened in the Thailand Open. He made another redemption in the 2022 Indonesia Open held last June, Prannoy reached semi-finals. In the Malaysia Open last July, he ended his run in the quarterfinals. He replicated his finish in the Malaysia Masters 2022, losing in the semi-finals. In the same month, he only reached quarter finals in the Singapore Open. Last August, in the Japan Open, he lost in the quarter-finals.
The 2022 BWF World Tour started on january 11 and will end on December 18 – and in its fifth season. The tour consists of 22 tournaments that lead to the final tournament in december. These 22 tournaments are divided into five levels: Level 1 is the World Tour finals, Level 2 is called Super 1000, Level 3 is called Super 750, Level 4 is called Super 500, and Level 5 is called Super 300.
