He is only the second Bundesliga player to win the award after Mueller, who won in 1970 and 1972.Lewandowski’s tally represents the highest in Europe since Cristiano Ronaldo bagged 48 goals for Real Madrid in 2014-15. Lionel Messi has won the award a record six times while Ronaldo has taken it four times but they only scored 30 and 29 goals respectively in 2020-21.

He has netted over 500 goals in total for his clubs and country since starting his career. Earlier, the Poland striker was named as Germany’s Footballer of the Year for the second season in a row following his goal-scoring performance that helped Bayern secure their ninth consecutive German title. The Polish international picked up the award for the first time in 2019-20 after his stellar performance.

He also won the FIFA Best award in 2020, a year when he won the Champions League, Bundesliga, German Cup and World Club Cup with Bayern. Lewandowski also scored for a record Bundesliga home game as Bayern Munich thrashed promoted Bochum 7-0 at the Allianz Arena last weekend, making him the first Bundesliga player to score in 13 consecutive home games.

Since joining Bayern in 2014, Lewandowski has scored 305 goals in 336 competitive appearances for Bayern. This season, Lewandowski has already scored seven goals in five days as champions Bayern top the early Bundesliga table. “It’s not over yet, we are still hungry for titles,” said Lewandowski who hopes to help Bayern to a second Champions League title to add to the one he won with them in 2020.
