“The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, Elizabeth II,” the Premier League said in a statement. “Our thoughts and condolences are with The Royal Family and everyone around the world mourning the loss of Her Majesty.” The details of the weekend match postponement is yet to be announced. Liverpool are due to face Wolves at Anfield on Saturday.
The EFL has already postponed Friday’s Championship fixtures in respect to the Queen. “A determination regarding the remainder of this weekend’s scheduled fixtures will be made following a review of the official mourning guidance, in addition to further consultation with DCMS and other sports on Friday morning,” the EFL said in a statement. Following the news from Buckingham Palace, Manchester United and Arsenal’s Europa League matches went ahead and observed a minute of silence before the kick-off. “UEFA and European football are truly saddened by the passing away of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, one of the world’s most-respected figures,” UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said in a statement.
The UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport reiterated that they are leaving the decision to postpone football fixtures to the organizers. “The decision as to whether sporting fixtures continue to go ahead is at the discretion of organizers. Organizers may wish to consider using black armbands and observing a silence before matches are played.”
The Northern Ireland Football League also announced that Friday night matches between Cliftonville and Glentoran and Larne and Dungannon have been postponed. The Scottish Professional Football League also said in a statement that the game between Cove Rangers and Dundee on Friday has been postponed. There are no fixtures expected on the funeral as it coincides with the international break.
Elsewhere, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced that the second day of the third and final Test between England and South Africa at the Oval has been called-off, along with all scheduled games in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. “For fixtures beyond Friday, updates will be provided in due course,” the ECB added. British horse racing chiefs also suspended events.
