This is the 11th time that Liverpool have progressed to their FA Cup third round, with this their first victory against Wolverhampton in the competition since February 1952 and won all of their last four away games against Wolves across all competitions, the club’s longest ever winning streak at the Molineux. This is also a career night for the Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher as he has been on the winning side in all five of his FA Cup matches for Liverpool.
The match with Brighton in the fourth round of the FA Cup will be a huge test for Liverpool, as Brighton was the team who beat Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Premier League last Saturday, a 3-0 triumph.
In an interview, Liverpool was asked whether he got the reaction he wanted from his squad and he said: “I think everybody who is with us got that reaction; it was the reaction we needed to show. We were compact, we were together, we had really good challenges, won challenges when we lost the ball and we played really good football in moments.” He also added, “All the individual performances were good and we were really together wherever we were. We won the ball higher up the pitch, we won it in the midfield and it was good. I said to the boys after the game that’s how it feels when you play well and win. We can’t remember it really anymore when that was the case, but tonight it was the case and we are quite happy.”
On the other side, the host, Wolverhampton tried to cope up and look for a leveler from an early goal of Liverpool, dictating the pace of the game on their side, had a smooth ball movement, provided an 11 shot with two shots on target, had a 58% possession, and 604 passes with 85% pass accuracy, but neither converter for an equalizer or even for a comeback victory to keep their FA run alive.
The Wolves manager Lopetegui was frustrated by the Cup exit, “Looking at the two matches, we deserved more. We have scored more goals than the opponent in the first match. All of you know why.
We suffered a strange goal in the first half. We start playing well in the first minutes. After we suffered emotionally, we were out of the match until half-time. We changed some things. In the second half they put it all on the pitch, a big effort, character, personality. Unfortunately for us, we didn’t score,” said Julen Lopetegui after the match.
“We had a big dream to continue in the cup. Now we have to put 100 percent focus on the Premier League. Today we lost and I am sad.”
Wolves possibly had a major final signing with Pablo Sarabia from Paris Saint-Germain just before kick-off and the hope will be that the well-decorated winger can make a huge positive impact for Lopetegui’s team in the final third of the pitch.
