The Last of Us II bags seven awards at The Game Awards 2020

Another big night has concluded for video games, with one of the most prestigious award giving body awarded its newest recipients in the virus-hit The Games Awards 2020. There was not a single attendee in this three-hour event broadcasting from Los Angeles, London and Tokyo, with Geoff Keighley as the host. The Last of Us Part II came out victorious, taking home 7 trophies including Game of the Year.

The Last of Us I, moved over 17 million copies, which generated more than $1 billion at retail during its release in 2013. Meanwhile, the second installment to the post-pandemic game, where hundreds of developers labored to complete the sequel, was made its successful launch earlier this year, a couple of of months before the whole world was halted by an actual pandemic.

“Everyone at Naughty Dog, I can’t wait to hug and high five and get drunk with each one of you. That’s gonna have to wait til next year. I wanna just thank every person who worked on this game within Naughty Dog and outside,” said Neil Druckmann, the game’s director, in his virtual acceptance speech. They bested the likes of Hades, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Doom Eternal.

Apart from Game of the Year, The Last of Us II also bagged the Best Action/Adventure, Best Audio Design, Best Narrative, Innovation in Accessibility, Best Performance (Laura Bailey as Abby) and Best Game Direction. Laura Bailey, who played Abby in the game, was very emotional in accepting her award as she faced a lot of challenges portraying this role.

More winners are as follows: “Among Us” (Best Mobile Game and Best Multiplayer Game); “Mortal Combat 11 Ultimate” (Best Fighting Game); “Ghost of Tsushima” (Players’ Voice and Art Direction); “Microsoft Flight Simulator” (Best Simulation/Strategy Game); “Final Fantasy VII Remake” (Best Role-playing Game and Best Score and Music); “Hades” (Best Indie Game and Best Action Game).

Among early winners are: “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” (Best Family Game); “Phasmophobia” (Best Debut Game); and “Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout” (Best Community Support). Other winners include:  “Half-Life: Alyx” (Best VR/AR); “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2” (Best Sports/racing game); “Elden Ring” (Most Anticipated Game); and “No Man’s Sky” (Best Ongoing Game).

In addition to prizes, The Game Awards included exclusive video game trailers, celebrity appearances from Gal Gadot, Keanu Reeves and Brie Larson, who presented the best performance award via Zoom – all the presenters and nominees were connected via videoconference. Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder also performed “Future Days”, a song he had written for “The Last of Us Part II”.

Meanwhile, actor Tom Holland zoomed in from Atlanta, who will appear in the Uncharted movie, based on the PlayStation video game franchise – to introduce Nolan North. North announced that “Among Us,” was winner of the best multiplayer game award. In exclusive game teasers, Vin Diesel is a dinosaur hunter in “Ark II,” the upcoming sequel to “Ark: Survival Evolved.
