Farewell, GOAT of Valorant. Tyson Ngo, or TenZ, the undisputed king of the game, has officially retired his mouse and keyboard. It’s a terrible day for both Valorant and the esports world, but let’s take a moment to remember his tremendous career!
TenZ: From CS:GO Legend to Valorant Icon
Remember when TenZ was killing it in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, one of the best esports games out there? The game marked the beginning of his quest to excellence, giving all the fans a glimpse of the unrivaled skill set he possessed. Joining Valorant came as no surprise in his dominance of the scene while under his four-year tenure, winning two international trophies.
He was solid in his first time with Cloud9 playing Valorant, but when he joined Team Sentinels, the ride really started to gain momentum. He brought victory after victory, and for most parts of 2021, he became instrumental in smashing Fnatic 3-0 in the grand final of Masters Reykjavik, becoming the very first international Valorant champions. That was a feat of Valorant history!
TenZ and his team, Sentinels, also recently clinched the VCT 2024 Masters Madrid, one of the biggest esports tournaments in 2024, with a solid 3:2 against Gen.G Esports. But they fell short to fourth place in Seoul last August 25 when they were thoroughly defeated by Team Heretics with a 1:2 loss.
An Epic Player Leaves the Stage
Then, on September 15th, that bombshell news the Valorant community had been waiting for was out: TenZ is retiring. The GOAT, the man single-handedly carrying his team to victory, took leave from the competitive scene.
In his heartfelt message, TenZ said that he was indeed thankful for all the experiences and achievements he had but it’s time to move on because there are other things he wanted to focus on, such as content creation and maybe even take a break from the grind.
Though the mythical Valorant player has not posted what kind of reasons led him to retire, a huge part of which probably stemmed from a few points. His career in professional esports was so demanding, and he wanted to try out other opportunities that might have prompted him to quit.

TenZ’s Impact on Valorant
TenZ is so much more than a fantastic player; he inspired many young gamers who wanted to be as good as him and produced skills and strategies like people used on Valorant, so it’s really going to be felt on the game for a long time.
He is not really going anywhere in the gaming scene, after all. Upon retirement from competitive play, TenZ will be keeping active through content creation on his YouTube channel, interacting with fans across different platforms, and hopefully making visits to Valorant events and tournaments now and then.

Indeed, as many of his fans would quote, “This is TenZ’s world, and we are just living in it.,” showing how big of a deal his retirement was to the Valorant community.
