UFC bantamweight fighter Irwin Rivera was reportedly arrested and jailed on two counts of attempted murder on Thursday, allegedly stabbing his two sisters in Boynton Beach, Florida.
According to online records, the 31-year-old MMA has been charged with two counts of premeditated murder in the first degree. However, according to an incident report obtained by ESPN, he has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.
He was taken into custody by the Boynton Beach Police Department with no bond set.
Upon ESPN’s report, a 22-year-old and 33-year-old woman were both found alive with multiple stab wounds and taken to the hospital. The younger woman suffered wounds to her head, back and arm, while the older woman was stabbed on her face, back, arms and hands.
Documents show that Rivera ran away from the scene but was later apprehended and confessed to police, “I killed my sisters.” Police say that the athlete, who used a “brass knuckle knife” in the alleged incident, told authorities he was compelled by a “higher power.”
Rivera were contacted by the police around 7 a.m. local time, and reportedly told authorities, “I killed my sisters” with a “brass knuckle knife,” unaware they had survived the attack. Rivera said he stabbed the women after being instructed to by a “higher power.”
In a statement, UFC said it was investigating the matter, calling the situation “extremely troubling.”
“UFC is aware of the recent incident involving Irwin Rivera and subsequently received information from his management that he has been exhibiting behavior consistent with mental health issues,” the statement read. “The allegations are extremely troubling and the organization is currently gathering additional information. The investigation is ongoing and any potential next steps including disciplinary action or medical attention will be determined upon the conclusion. Furthermore, UFC has informed Rivera’s management that he will not be offered a bout at this time.”
In the report, one of the sisters told police that the women were sleeping in Irwin’s extra room when they awoke to him stabbing them repeatedly with the knife.
Following the arrest, the UFC released a statement obtained by ESPN saying he will not be offered a fight at this time and that his management has since informed the organization that Irwin has “been exhibiting behavior consistent with mental health issues.
“The allegations are extremely troubling and the organization is currently gathering additional information. The investigation is ongoing and any potential next steps including disciplinary action or medical attention will be determined upon the conclusion.”
The one-time Titan FC Bantamweight champion recent match was back in September 2020, wherein losing a split decision against Andre Ewell.
Marc Raimondi of ESPN reported the news, noting Boynton Beach (Florida) Police Department spokesperson Stephanie Slater said that the fighter was accused of stabbing his two sisters. He is being held without bail.
According to the incident report, one of the sisters said they were staying with Rivera and woke up when he started stabbing them. Both women are alive and were rushed to the hospital with multiple stab wounds.
When police made contact with Rivera, he said “I killed my sisters” and did so because a “higher power” commanded him.
