Serie A has been given the green light from the Italian government to host 50% capacity in all stadiums in the upcoming season. Stadiums in the “White Zone”, the lowest tier of virus restrictions, are the ones approved by the government, while only those with “Green Pass” or the proof of vaccination and/or a negative COVID-19 test are allowed to enter the stadiums. The Green Pass is also known as the EU Digital COVID Certificate, proving an individual has been vaccinated, received a negative test result within 48 hours or recovered from COVID-19 in the last six months. The Government has so far only given the go-ahead for 50 per cent capacity, reduced to 25 per cent for sporting arenas that are enclosed. Catch our latest soccer analysis and prediction.

“We talked about it this morning with Minister Speranza and for next season I can give you the news that it will start from 22 August with 25% of the public in attendance,” Health Undersecretary Andrea Costa said in a radio show. “There will be a gradual progression to arrive in the following weeks with a percentage increase. The next season, so it will be with the public in attendance and not less than 25%.”

Serie A clubs have lost over €1.2 billion since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, due to games played behind closed doors. The last Serie A game played in full capacity was during Roma’s loss to Cagliari 4-3 on March 1st, 2020. During the unveiling of the fixture list for the 2021-22 Serie A campaign, President of Lega Serie A, Paolo Dal Pino has revealed the plans to open the stadiums.

“If, and I really hope this is true, by the end of the summer we’ll have a very high number of people vaccinated in Italy, then we can start returning to normal life,” Dal Pino said to a radio station, speaking about the possibility of fans in stadiums. “What we also hope is that we can open up the stadiums to at least 50 per cent capacity for Serie A matches when the season starts in August.

In the recently concluded UEFA Euro 2020, Rome hosted several matches with 25 percent capacity, including Italy vs. Turkey, which was also the opening ceremony for the entire tournament. The Serie A season is due to kick off on August 21. It is learnt that the state of emergency for the pandemic has also been extended to December 31, 2021.
