The French football season has finally started with some exciting matches that kicked-off the football action. Defender Oualid El Hajjam headed powerfully from a corner to open the scoring for the second-tier champions Troyes before Hakimi, who joined PSG from Italian champions Inter Milan for 60 million euros, equalized with a crisp shot past the Troyes goalkeeper in the 18th minute. Two minutes later, Mauro Icardi then scored the winner, controlling a Kylian Mbappe pass, to seal the win.

“It was a very difficult game and we didn’t start it well. We need to do much better,” PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino said. “We conceded far too many chances for my liking.” The win came amid the rumors of Lionel Messi’s transfer to PSG. “His name is associated with many clubs, there are a lot of rumors,” Pochettino said. “We will see what happens in the next few days.”

PSG was without Neymar, who only just returned from an extended break following the Copa America in Brazil, in this opening win. There was also no debut for new goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma or for Sergio Ramos, recruited from Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Talismanic Turkish striker Burak Yilmaz grabbed a last-gasp goal to save defending champions Lille from losing their first game.

Lille were trailing 3-1 before late goals from Nanitamo Ikone and Yilmaz gave them a hard earned away point. Elsewhere, Bordeaux suffered a 2-0 home defeat by top-tier debutants Clermont Foot, while Nice were held to a 0-0 home stalemate by Reims and Lorient earned a 1-1 draw at St Etienne. Angers celebrated a 2-0 win at Strasbourg.

Coach Peter Bosz began his Lyon career with a 1-1 home draw against Brest in front of 29,000 people inside the stadium. In Brittany 18,000 fans were on hand to see Rennes draw 1-1 with promoted Lens. Ligue 1 kicked-off with a Monaco and Nantes draw, a week before any of the continent’s other leading competitions.
