Manchester United confirmed that they have already parted ways to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after three years as manager at Old Trafford following the dismal loss to struggling Watford 4-1 and a run of four losses in the past five Premier League matches, including a 5-0 home thumping at the hands of rivals Liverpool. “Manchester United announces that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as Manager,” the club said. “Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision. While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.”
The former striker took over as interim boss in 2018 Solskjaer before being given the permanent coaching post in 2019. He signed a new three-year deal in July this year. Solskjaer saw the second-place finish in the Premier League last season and the summer signings of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho that supposedly gave him a boost. “His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a manager who gave us many great moments. He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family,” the statement added. Solskjaer failed to deliver silverware during his tenure, finishing second against Villarreal in last season’s Europa League final being the closest.
The club is now looking for a successor, with former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane and current Leicester City coach Brendan Rogers reportedly the frontrunners. In the meantime, former midfielder Michael Carrick, who was part of Solskjaer’s coaching team, will take charge for a crucial Champions League clash away to Villarreal.
