Game developer Konami has announced that the its long-running football series, Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) will be free-to-play and will be renamed to eFootball. Starting autumn, PES in the west and Winning Eleven in Japan will now be called eFootball globally. The new game will be released on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC in the Autumn, with iOS and Android versions later.
Although the game will be free, Konami explains that some content and game modes will cost money. “As a digital-only title, Konami will regularly add new content and game modes after launch this Autumn,” a statement from the publisher reads. “In the future, certain game modes will be sold as optional DLC, giving players the freedom to build an experience that follows their interests.”
Cross-platform matches will also be implemented allowing PlayStation, Xbox and Steam players to compete against each other, along with a season pass system. Konami also plans to add iOS and Android players to cross-platform matches, and kick off a series of eSports tournaments. eFootball will launch with exhibition matches and seemingly a selection of 9 clubs to play with.
Released in 1995, Konami’s eFootball PES has had an esports scene since 2003, one of which was UEFA eEURO 2020 that was held during pandemic last year. The UEFA eEURO 2020 commenced its qualifying draw last January 2020. It is the first national team eFootball tournament powered by Konami and in partnership with UEFA. Its first edition was won by Italy, who also won the real-life Euro 2020.
Konami has also announced Brazilian football star Neymar as one of their official ambassadors for the eFootball series. “I am honored to have signed a contract with KONAMI. I would like to continue playing with passion and stir up much excitement in the world of soccer along with the PES and Winning Eleven series!” Neymar said in a statement.
Konami also confirmed that the company will soon be releasing an exclusive “Iconic Moment Series” featuring Neymar on PES 2021. The Paris Saint-Germain superstar has signed up to promote all KONAMI football games, starting with the ‘eFootball PES 2021: Season Update’, which will include an appearance in the Iconic Moment Series on the MyClub mode.
