Fulham clinched Championship title following Luton victory

2 min read

Fulham clinched the Championship title for the first time since Jean Tigana’s side did so in 2000-01 following the  7-0 win over Luton Town. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored another brace to reach a record-breaking 43 goals in a single season. They are only 2 goals short to level Manchester City’s Championship second-tier record of 108 goals in a single campaign. Catch our live football predictions here!

Tom Cairney scored Fulham’s 100th goal of the season and opened the scoring in the 29th minute before Kenny Tete made it two 10 minutes later. Fulham dominated the game until the second half, with Fabio Carvalho’s goal and Mitrovic’s first goal of the night. Bobby De Cordova-Reid added a fifth before Jean Michel Seri scored the sixth and then Mitrovic completed his brace.

“The aim to be champions was always inside our dressing room. We knew what we wanted from the first day,” head coach Marco Silva told a news agency. “It started to feel in October and November that we had been so dominant, we had to finish in this way. To score 106 goals is an amazing achievement for us and it’s fantastic to see players growing with every match.” Follow for free betting tips

The 44-year-old coach added: “We have to prepare well ourselves. It’s not really different from this season. The challenge will be tougher, but it was tough this season. We’ve built and created something special this season. If I don’t have ambition at my age then something is wrong. I have to congratulate all of them, our full squad, the staff working behind the scenes.”

Last month, Fulham beat Preston 3-0 to seal their Premier League return after just one season, with Mitrovic also scoring a brace and breaking Ivan Toney’s Championship scoring record by netting his 32nd and 33rd league goals of the season. Earlier, Silva’s men made history as they scored 19 goals in three games, becoming the first English side in 88 years to score six or more goals in three consecutive games.

Fulham spent 13 consecutive seasons in the Premier League between 2001-2014 until the recent years saw them in inconsistent form, stumbling in either promotion or relegation in the last five campaigns. It is the fifth consecutive season they have changed divisions as they were also promoted in 2018 and 2020 before being relegated in their first season back in the top flight.
