Eintracht Frankfurt’s Adi Hütter to take over as Gladbach head coach

2 min read

Borussia Mönchengladbach has announced Adi Hutter as their new head coach for the start of the 2021-22 campaign, succeeding Marco Rose who will be joining Borussia Dortmund next season. Hutter, who is currently in charge at Eintracht Frankfurt, has signed a three-year contract with Gladbach. Frankfurt look set for a surprise Champions League berth after an exceptional Bundesliga season with the 51-year-old.

“We’re very happy about Adi Hütter’s acceptance,” said Borussia’s sporting director Max Eberl. “For our team and our club, he’s the best coach for the challenges and goals that lie ahead of us from the summer.” The former Austria international rose to prominence as manager of Red Bull Salzburg, where he won the domestic double in the 2014-15 season. “I didn’t take the decision lightly,” said Hütter. “I’ve experienced three unbelievably successful and intense years that I, together with the team, want to end on a high. It’s a chance for us to make history. All that matters to me now is the success of Eintracht. We want to consolidate our position in the table and qualify for the Champions League.”

He joined Frankfurt in 2018, replacing Niko Kovac who had left for Bayern Munich, and led them to the Europa League semi-finals and to within four points of a top-four finish in his debut season. According to a local news outlet, Hutter will take over as Gladbach head on a two-year deal with a one-year option. It is learnt that Gladbach is ready to shelve €7.5 million release clause in Hütter’s contract with Frankfurt.

Frankfurt is currently sitting fourth in the Bundesliga table, seven points ahead of Dortmund in fifth and 13 ahead of eight-placed Gladbach with six games to play. However, with his departure in the club, the Austrian coach will play no part in what is likely to be Frankfurt’s first campaign in the top tier of European club competition since 1960.

Meanwhile, Gladbach have been searching for a new head coach following Rose’s decision to join Dortmund at the beginning of next season. Dortmund sacked Lucien Favre in December, with Edin Terzic placed in interim control. Gladbach is eighth and likely to miss out on European qualification as their form slumped, with seven losses from 10 games in all competitions.
