Belgium and Denmark tops Group B table to reach next round of Euro 2020

Belgium maintained their impressive momentum to Euro 2020 by beating Finland 2-0 to finish top of Group B, with Denmark behind them after claiming an astonishing 4-1 victory over Russia to make it into the last 16. World number one Belgium will face a third-placed team in Sevilla with Denmark playing Wales in Amsterdam a day earlier. Follow us for more online sports betting, predictions and odds.

The Red Devils dominated the game against Finland but the first score came from Finland keeper Lukas Hradecky’s own goal in the 74th minute after he mishandled a Thomas Vermaelen header over the line. Romelu Lukaku saw Kevin De Bruyne’s pass to score the other in the 81st for his third goal at Euro 2020. Belgium became the third team after Italy and the Netherlands to win all three group games.

After the game, Belgium coach Roberto Martinez expressed his delight with his team’s performance. “Three wins, three professional performances, three different styles,” Martinez said. “To be able to see 90 minutes from Axel and Eden, and Kevin was almost on the pitch for 90 minutes, that was very satisfying. On top of that, every outfield player has been on the pitch in these three games.”

Meanwhile, Finland, who only needed a draw to seal the runners-up spot in Group B, finished third in its first appearance at a major tournament, after the Danes thrashed the Russians in Copenhagen. “We didn’t reach the goal today to get at least one point to go through from the group stage so in that sense we’re disappointed,” said Finland coach Markku Kanerva.

Earlier in the day, goals from Mikkel Damsgaard, Yussuf Poulsen, Andreas Christensen and Joakim Maehle gave the Danes their first win of the tournament, enough to progress in the next round of the competition. Damsgaard open the scoring with a 38th-minute wonder goal before Russia’s Roman Zobnin allowed Yussuf Poulsen to double the lead on the hour.

Christensen’s made it 3-1 before Maehle sealed the three-points for the Danes, who lost their opening two games in the wake of Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest. Artem Dzyuba gave Russia a consolation after converting a 70th minute penalty. “If anyone deserves this, it’s our players,” Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand said. “I can’t imagine how they managed to come back from what they went through.”

Results in the final Group B and C games have left Finland and Ukraine in third place in the respective standings with three points. Meanwhile, France, England, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Switzerland all are assured of advancing to the round of 16 without even playing because they have four points and will finish no worse than third in their groups.
