Stefano Pioli’s new tactic proved not effective as AC Milan suffered another huge blow over their counterpart Inter in the Milan derby at Serie A.
This is the three-game losing streak for AC Milan who found themselves out of the Top 5 and fell to the sixth spot as they lost the Derby della Madonnina against Inter 1-0. Rossoneri performed poorly throughout the game despite having few chances to register a goal in the scoresheet. Olivier Giroud, the French international, failed to deliver in this match. Before this important derby match, AC Milan’s Head Coach Stefano Pioli made some bold changes, he sidelined his best players in order to have a free flow movement – he demoted Rafael Leao to the bench, a Serie A’s player of the year last season. Leao have been struggling this season, but still managed to score a goal in Milan’s only win this year, a match against Salernitana, and a 2-2 draw with Lecce.
After the match, the 3-5-2 formation implied by Pioli was turned out a failure, especially with Leao riding the bench. The first opportunity of the match went immediately to Inter who found themselves holding better openings with Calhanoglu reversing a nice ball into Lautaro Martinez who did an impressive fly for the first time just inside the box, but Tatarusanu made a quick reaction and save the ball by tapping it one hand to the bar.
Late in the first half, Lautaro Martinez perfects a successful delivery to reach his seven career goals against AC Milan and registered the winning goal for his side to take home the Serie A Derby victory. Martinez became Inter’s second-best foreign scorer in the history of the Milan derby, the first one being Stefano Nyers (11).
Pioli strikes again by making an interesting decision at half-time, when he decided to withdraw Messias after an unsuccessful 45 minutes as a Mezzala, with Briham Diaz being a replacement for his position. ANother change happened within a 10 minutes span – Rafael Leao and Alexis Salemaekers checked into the game for Origi and Calabria.
Giroud had his moments, as he had another opportunity to toy the goalkeeper, this time via free-kick around 223 yards, however the French international wasted an effort a couple of yards wide of the near post. The final chance from Pioli happened five minutes before the match ended, as Kjaer was subbed-out by Ante Rebic who did not do anything as Lautarohad another chance to double the lead with a close-range header but was flagged by VAR review.
With this defeat, AC Milan was with the similar level on points with Lazio and Atalanta — as Pioli acknowledged that there was some errors committed in the game and looking to change it immediately, as his main defenders suffers the most with his new format, failing to defend and to contribute on ball movement that should result into scoring.
