Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won the French Super Cup 2022 after thrashing French Cup winners Nantes 4-0 in Tel Aviv, Israel. This is their 15th Trophee des Champions title and the first under new coach Christophe Galtier. Neymar netted a brace, while Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos both scored to give Galtier his first silverware in his first competitive game as PSG coach. Catch FA Cup fixtures here!
“We played a very serious game,” Galtier said. “We expected a difficult match and the fact that the players approached it with a lot of desire, determination and seriousness helped us to win.” Galtier’s last trophy came in the 2021-22 season where he led Lille to the Ligue 1 title. “We talk about stars, but they are above all players who want to win titles and trophies,” Follow the Ligue 1 table and updates here.
Nantes won the French Cup last season, the club’s first trophy in 21 years, that set up this match. Despite missing PSG’s most expensive player Kylian Mbappe due to yellow card suspension, Nantes failed to create chances against a much stronger contender. Lionel Messi opened the scoring 22 minutes on the pitch with an assist from Neymar, who scored a free kick in first-half injury time.
Veteran defender Sergio Ramos added another one in the 57th minute and a fine finish from Neymar, converting a penalty in the 82nd after being fouled by Jean-Charles Castelletto, sealed the win for PSG. “If we are here it’s because the team won the league last season with a different manager, who contributed to this trophy,” said Galtier, who dedicated the win to the sacked Mauricio Pochettino.
“It’s fairly clear that this isn’t the same PSG that we beat last season,” said Nantes boss Antoine Kombouaré, who previously coached PSG. “When they lose the ball, they’re capable of pressing high up the field. They’re energetic. They seem to be enjoying themselves and they’re efficient. The only good thing about the game is that we didn’t lose any points. Things start for real next Sunday at Angers.”
Last season, Lille ended PSG’s run of eight Trophée des Champions titles. However, the Parisians remain the only team with more victories in the competition, bagging 11 trophies – three more than next-best Olympique Lyonnais with 7. PSG start the defense of their title at Clermont on 6 August while Nantes play at Angers on 7 August.
