NBA All Star Game 2023 is the 72nd All Star-Game to be hosted by Salt Lake City on February 19, 2023 – as the voting officially opened last December 20 (EST) as a sign that the 2022-2023 regular season reached the one-third mark. Here we will discuss everything you must know about the upcoming 2023 All-Star Game.
Utah almost lose the hosting rights
During the first quarter of 2022, the state of Utah passed the HB11 Bill which emphasizes the prevention of transgender girls from participating in school sports that match their gender identities. The passing of this bill hampered and harmed many sport activities in the state of Utah including the possibility of the NBA pulling the hosting right of Salt Lake City to the All-Star Game.
Last 2016, NBA pulled out the scheduled 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte due to the league’s opposition to the North Carolina’s HB2 — that reduce or limits the anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQIA+ Community (In 2019 Charlotte hosted the All-Star Game after HB2 was repealed.)
Last April 2022, Commissioner Adam Silver that there have no discussion of relocating the All-Star Game out of Salt lake City and they insist that the NBA will create a bubble-like atmosphere where they will imposed an inclusive environment and will use the said exhibition as an advocacy to convince the legislation of Utah to repeal the implementation of HB11 as it invokes discrimination, stigma, and the rights of transgender community joining the sports.
New Fan Voting Format will avoid unnecessary votes like last All-Star Game
Last 2022 NBA All-Star Game, a shocking thing happened – Andrew Wiggins made the All-Star Game and became an All-Star starter which creates a question on whether the All-Star Game is really an important accolade for a basketball player or not. Although, Andrew Wiggins, the Canadian Mamba, really deserves to participate in the All-Star Game because of his vital role with Warriors successful season, and later on, Championship.
This year, a notable change happened, voting will no longer be allowed on Twitter and will only be casted to the NBA App or the NBA Website. Fans will only be allowed to vote once per day and there will only be a selected date where votes count triple and they must fill-in and submit a full ballot consisting of three frontcourt players and two guards for each conference.
Although the issue of Andrew Wiggins becoming an All-Star starter was not a big deal, he created a playbook for teams and players to utilize social media voting in their favor – which will cause further damage to the reputation of the NBA All-Star Game. The new format will seek to improve and create solid and real All-Star lineups this upcoming 2023 All-Star Game
