Napoli down Sassuolo to move 15 points as Serie A leader

Napoli thrashed Sassuolo 2-0 to continue their dominance at the Serie A table and had a 15 points clear difference over Inter. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen scored two goals in the first-half for their seventh straight victory.

This is the most successful season so far for Napoli, closing their way to their Serie A title in almost 33 years of waiting, with them registering 62 points in 23 games. “We won the last few games [before Friday’s win], but there was less quality,” Napoli manager said in a post-game interview. “Tonight, on the other hand, in possession, in phase management, in being a team in all things, I felt we were superior to the last games and I can classify that as a great performance.” Follow for more accurate Football predictions here!

In the first half, Kvaratskhelia started to quest for the first goal with his solo performance – driving his way near the box before firing it past Consigli in the 12th minute for the first goal of the match. Lauriente had the chance for an equalizer for Sassuolo when he successfully past two Napoli defenders inside the box and kicked it but hit the bar, then the possession back to Napoli. Defrel had a similar chance near the post but missed a wide open shot.

Osimhen aggressively drove his way for a solo goal as he past three Sassuolo defenders inside the box but his attempt hit the post and went back to Sassuolo. Seven minutes later, Rrahmani made a stunning long assist to the Nigerian international Osimhen who had a second chance to double the lead and he made Consigli caught off guard with his high kick from an acute angle to reach the side of the net. He became the Serie A top scorer this season with 18 goals – he truly is a scoring machine.

“In my opinion we suffered a couple of times because Sassuolo are well coached and play good football, so you can’t have 90 minutes of supremacy and sometimes you have to suffer. We are living a good moment, but nobody has the presumption to go softer and these are important signals for the future,” said Napoli Coach Spalleti.

The Nigerian International also had the opportunity to score double with an assist from his teammate inside the box and he made a header but missed wide. At the 39th minute of the match, the league-leader was lagging on the defense as Lauriente made his way to kick it to register Sassuolo’s first goal. However, it was reviewed by VAR as an offside and the score was disallowed.

In the second half, it was total domination from the home side as Osimhen had a couple of chances but blew it all. Despite that, it is still worth noting that after the tight first half, Napoli had total control and ended the match brilliantly, maintaining their 2-0 commanding lead to make their way for 15 points difference over the second player Inter, and eighteen points difference over Roma and Milan. The Serie A leaders have scored 56 goals in just 23 Serie A games, breaking their old record of goals in 2016-2017 season with 55. It is also their fourth straight victory and a clean sheet for Napoli, a longest streak without conceding a goal since March 2018.

So far, Sassuolo is suffering a third game losing streak against Napoli in Serie A and with a total of five games without a win over the league-leader. The Neroverdi remain at the 15th place of the 2022-2023 Serie A table with 24 points.
