We all know that the Olympic Opening is one of the most spectacular shows in the history of entertainment. Once every four years, the appointed host country prepares a sequenced performance that showcases the host country’s culture and history. The list of the best opening ceremonies in the Olympics is already long, but there are a few notable ones that are worth holding in high regard.

Iconic Olympics opening events

Tokyo (1964)

Before Tokyo hosted the Summer Olympics in 2021, the Japanese capital city had already opened its fort to the world in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. This edition was deemed exceptional because it was the very first Asian country to host a prestigious multi-sport event. It was also the first time the Olympic Games were televised in real time and in complete color.

Atlanta (1996)

The 1996 Olympic Games were one of the most memorable editions in the tournament’s history, and there are a few notable reasons why. The 1996 Olympics had a simple concept—a cultural celebration that pays homage to the rich tradition of the American South. Other key moments are the interactive dance performance that reenacted the American Civil War and the haunting performance of Celine Dion.

Moscow (1980)

The 1980 Moscow Olympics were only attended by 81 countries due to the huge international boycott that took place following the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979. On the other hand, the show was a grand spectacle with a mosaic sequence, professional performers, and a human pyramid that you’ve never seen before.

Los Angeles (1984)

The United States has hosted the Olympic Games many times, but the 1984 Los Angeles edition is deemed the best. The international event is a huge tribute to American music, including a colossal marching band accompanied by musicians from every state. This is also the first time the epic “Olympic Fanfare and Theme” was introduced, regarded as the most iconic anthem in the Olympics.

Rio de Janeiro (2016)

The 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are the most practical opening ceremony in the history of the Olympics. According to Fernando Meirelles, the event’s co-director, they decided to maintain the low budget to align with the country’s economic status at that time. However, despite being cheap, the budget did not go to waste because it was a successful show.

The event showcased Brazil’s flora and fauna, the culture of the indigenous people of the Amazon, and the hypnotic catwalk of model Gisele Bündchen while “The Girl from Ipanema” was playing.

Salt Lake City (2002)

One of the unforgettable editions of the Olympic Games was the 2022 edition at Salt Lake City in the United States. The event was held just five months following the devastating 9-11 attacks in the World Trade Center. Due to the somber tone of the circumstances surrounding the event, the organizers decided to veer away from the usual grand spectacle and focus on patriotism and solidarity.

Athens (2004)

The 2004 Athens Olympic Games opening ceremony is one of the most visually appealing in the tournament’s history. To commemorate the event’s return to its birthplace, the ceremony paid tribute to Ancient Greek culture.

The show has an avant-garde visual flair, with notable elements such as the parade involving living statues, mythical creatures, and several structures suspended in the air.

Sydney (2000)

One of the notable Olympic Games is the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The host country, Australia, made an excellent decision to showcase the country’s living treasures, the Aboriginal people. Upon watching the event, you will venture on a tour of the Great Barrier Reef and witness the moving performances of over 1,000 aboriginal people.

London (2012)

What do you get if Danny Boyle, an Oscar-awardee, directed the Olympic Games opening ceremony? It was a masterpiece.

It was quite rare for an Olympic Games opening ceremony to have a concept of comedy, and boy, was I kidding when they pulled it off. The Slumdog Millionaire director managed to fill the opening ceremony with British humor. Some of the iconic segments from the event were the puppet performance, James Bond (Daniel Craig) jumping from a helicopter, and the hilarious skit of Rowan Atkinson as the one and only Mr. Bean.

Beijing (2008)

Finally, most people would agree that the most iconic opening ceremony in history is the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It was reported that the producers spent a whopping $100 million on the event, and the result was golden!

The ceremony was divided into segments, including the epic performance, in which hundreds of dancers held brushes to paint a colossal scroll, acrobats performed while suspended in the air, 200 musicians played an ancient musical instrument, and a hundred dancers held blocks to create giant characters like a printing press.

Indeed, the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games is one of the significant events in the world of sports and entertainment. This is why host countries of the tournament tried to outdo what was already showcased.
