Manchester United bounced back from the club’s worst Premier League start to date as they handed Liverpool their first league defeat in 21 games, keeping the Reds winless early in the season. The loss marked the first time that Liverpool has failed to win at least one of its opening three games under manager Jurgen Klopp. Catch soccer predictions today and more online sports betting tips and odds!
“They were really aggressive in the beginning, it was clear what would happen. But reality shows if you are ready, or really ready, and they were more aggressive than us,” Klopp said. “We can play better but had good moments, and from tomorrow we will fight again.” Mohammed Salah’s goal in the 81st minute was not enough to beat the early two goals by United courtesy of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.
The match started with thousands of Manchester United fans’ protests against the Glazer family owners. Coming from being at the bottom of the Premier League table for the first time since the inaugural season in ‘92-93, the Red Devils lined up without captain Harry Maguire and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time since January 15.
Despite their absence, Rashford displayed the fruit of his training as he made an attempt just four minutes into the pitch, but could not get his shot past goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Anthony Elanga hit another chance for United before Jadon Sancho finally netted to give the home team the lead in the 16th minute. Christian Eriksen also had a chance to net his debut goal for United but was stopped by Becker.
After the early chance, Rashford finally netted in the 53rd minute from Anthony Martial’s superb pass. Rashford has now scored five goals against Liverpool in 11 matches. Salah, who now scored a club record of 10 goals against United, hit the consolation for the Reds with less than 10 minutes remaining. This win also ended United’s eight-game winless streak over Liverpool in the Premier League.
“We can talk about tactics, but it’s all about attitude,” United coach Erik ten Hag said. “We brought it onto the pitch, there was a fighting spirit, and communication. You can see what they can achieve, because they can fucking good play football.” United will travel to Southampton next, while Liverpool will try to register their first win as they host Bournemouth next week.
