“It was impossible to reject this opportunity to have a chance to play for Nacional again, and we have a pre-agreement with the club.” Suarez said in the video. “In the next few hours, the details will be finalized and we hope the agreement we all want will be reached so we can enjoy this new stage and see each other in the coming days.” Follow us for more free betting tips, odds and predictions.
The Uruguay international became a free agent at the end of last campaign following two seasons with Atletico Madrid, helping them win the La Liga in his first full season after his long spell with Barcelona, scoring 21 goals in 2020-21. However, he was not able to duplicate his form last season, scoring only 11 goals in 35 matches with Madrid. Nacional also confirmed the pre-agreement on their own Twitter.
“The illusion of all,” Nacional wrote. “After the announced pre-agreement. Luis Suarez is ONE STEP away from returning home.” Earlier, approximately 20,000 fans wore Suarez-inspired masks at a recent game. In the ninth minute of the same game, fans chanted ‘Ole, ole, ole, ole, Lucho, Lucho’, in honor to the number Suarez wore while playing for Barca and Atletico over the last eight years.
The hashtag #SuarezANacional (Suarez to Nacional) also trended and tweeted millions of times over the last week or so, showing how much the fans anticipate his return. At 18-years-old, Suarez helped Nacional win the Uruguayan league title in his professional debut. This time, Suarez will again help them reclaim the title they lost to arch-rivals Penarol last year.
Suarez was previously linked to Aston Villa, while more recently, MLS side LAFC, D.C. United and Seattle Sounders were also reportedly linked to him. However, Suarez, who is also the Uruguayan national team’s all-time leading scorer, with 68 goals in 132 games, highlighted that preparations for the World Cup will be his focus. MLS end their seasons in early October, while the World Cup starts in November.
