Monaco impresses as they thrash the Ligue 1 leader, Paris Saint-Germain 3-1. Wissam Ben Yedder scored twice to lead the victory.
The Paris based club have already lost three of their seven Ligue 1 games this year, their highest after seven games in a Ligue 1 calendar since 2010. On the other side of the history, Wissam Ben Yedder became Ligue 1’s second highest scorer in the 21st Century with 140 goals, lagging behind Kylian Mbappe’s 148 goals and surpassing Edinson Cavani’s 138. The result of the fixture moved Monaco up to the second place of the French top-flight’s standing with 47 points, seven points away from the leader Paris Saint-Germain with 54 points despite dropping their third loss in the league this season. This is a huge concern for the top French club as they needed to prepare and assess the readiness of this team to face the tough and top dog in the nearing Champions League showdown against Bayern Munich in the round of 16.
All three goals of Monaco came from the first half, Aleksandr Golovin scored the opening goal at the fourth minute to give Monaco side the much-needed momentum and it was followed by Ben Yedder at the 18th minute to double the lead and bury the reigning Champion. The Parisian club got some hope at the 39th minute when the 16 year-old Warren Zaire-Emery scored and cut the lead to a single point, however Ben Yedder had other plans and registered his second goal and the winning goal of the match at the extended time in the first half.
The Brazil international Neymar Jr struggled to make an impact, as Monaco defense designed to limit the offensive prowess of PSG’s stars including Neymar. Added to the fact also that Mbappe, PSG’s leading goal scorer, and Messi is missing in action due to injuries.
This is so far the worst woeful run of Paris Saint-Germain, although they relatively holding comfortable lead, sitting at the top of the Ligue 1 standing but if they do not made quick and major adjustments, addressing the issue of inconsistency whenever they missing stars like Messi and Mbappe, the lead could be erased in a blink of an eye.
The club already lost four games this year, across all France’s competitions and it doesn’t bode well for Christophe Galtier’s side as they prepare to have a first leg outing in the Champions League Round of 16 without Mbappe and also possibly without Messi.
Man of the Match – Wassim Ben Yedder (Monaco)
The all-around effort by Yedder gave Monaco a much needed victory to climb up the ladder of the Ligue 1 table with his assist and two goals that sealed their victory against the reigning Ligue 1 Champion.
