La Liga released a statement denouncing new proposals for the 60-80-team European Super League, saying that the “Super League is a disaster for national leagues”. “LaLiga once again denounces the plans for a so-called European Super League,” La Liga said in a statement. “Today the Super League promoters presented “principles” for what we know to be a direct threat to national football championships. Moreover, the proposed governance model is not democratic, instead giving the power and decisions to a few rich clubs, leaving small and medium-sized clubs aside.” Get the latest football predictions, odds and updates here!
In the newly launched proposal, the European Super League would see 60-80 teams involved, rather than the original 12, which was planned in 2021. The tournament would follow a four-tier system that would involve the current domestic competitions. The Spanish league has previously denounced the first format following the backlash from different European clubs, as well as the UEFA.
“Domestic championships disappear if there is no direct qualification to the top of European football. A model based on “various divisions” in European football is being proposed to allow the elites to ensure their permanence in the topflight, shunning the rest,” the statement added. “The bottom line is that the Super League is a disaster for national leagues, as a KPMG report shows, and it will sink small and medium-sized clubs across Europe, killing European football as we know it.”
Earlier, LaLiga president Javier Tebas responded to the new proposal in a tweet that accompanied by a cartoon showing the Super League as the wolf and European Football as Red Riding Hood. “The Super League is the wolf, who today disguises himself as a granny to try to fool European football,” Tebas wrote on Twitter, “but HIS nose and HIS teeth are very big.”
He added: “Four divisions in Europe? Of course the first for them, as in the 2019 reform. Government of the clubs? Of course only the big ones.” The European Super League is a proposed European competition led by A22 CEO Bernd Reichart. Its previous launch in April 2021 received multiple criticism and humiliation, with nine of the 12 clubs pulling out almost immediately after a backlash.
