Martin Odegaard on loan with Arsenal after Real Madrid exit

2 min read

Considered as one of the top young attacking talents in the world, midfielder Martin Odegaard has completed his move from Real Madrid to Arsenal on loan for the rest of the 2020-21 campaign. Mikel Arteta is filling the void that Mesut Ozil, Sokratis and Sead Kolasinac left after their club exits by signing young talents such as the Norwegian playmaker.

“It’s great that we’ve secured Martin to come to us until the end of the season,” Arteta said in a statement. “Martin is of course a player that we all know very well and although still young, he has been playing at the top level for a while. Martin will provide us with quality offensive options and we’re all excited to be integrating him into our plans between now and May.”

The Gunners won against Ajax and Real Sociedad in signing the youngster. At 15 in 2014, the attacking midfielder debut in Norway with Stromsgodset, becoming the youngest-ever player to feature in the top division. In 2015, he was recruited by Real Madrid and became their youngest player that time. However, he did not get a chance to establish himself as a first-team regular for the Los Galacticos.

He has impressed in various loan spells in Holland’s Eredivisie and also for Real’s divisional rivals Real Sociedad for three seasons from 2017/18, where he helped the club reach the final of the Copa Del Rey and also qualify for the Europa League. The 22-year-old has also made 25 appearances for Norway, making his debut in August 2014, the youngest debutant for his country’s senior national team.

“It has been some hectic days but I’ve been talking to the club, to the manager and it seems like a great project and a great club. I’m just so excited, when I felt like I had a chance to come here I felt like it was a really good chance to take,” Odegaard said. “I’m really happy to be here. Odegaard will wear shirt number 11 for the London club.

Gunners technical director Edu added: “I would like to thank everyone at Real Madrid and Martin’s representatives for their collaboration in making this loan move happen. Martin is an exceptional talent and we are strengthening our squad by introducing an exciting offensive player to the club for the remaining months of this season.”

Odegaard is a strong addition to Arteta’s team if he will play well with Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka to provide a solid base for Arsenal in midfield. He will also need to cope with the games of Bukayo Saka, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in attack. Arsenal is yet to announce if the young midfielder will be available to play his first game for Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League match.
