Manchester City clinched the Premier League title for the third time in four seasons under Pep Guardiola, after second-placed Manchester United defeated 2-1 at home defeated by Leicester City. The Reds’ fall at Old Trafford means City are 10 points clear with both sides having three games left to play, finally confirming their win despite a home defeat by Chelsea over the weekend.
“This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other,” Guardiola said after City were confirmed champions. “This was the hardest one. We will always remember this season for the way that we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players.” It’s the 10th trophy Guardiola has won at City since joining the club in 2016. Follow us for more soccer betting tips.
City finished 18 points behind Liverpool last season and was 13th, with 12 points from the opening eight games of this term. They went on an astonishing 21-game winning streak in all competitions after. Under Guardiola, City also won the Carabao Cup this season and will head to their first Champions League final against Chelsea.
“To come through this season, with all the restrictions and difficulties we’ve faced — and show the consistency we have is remarkable. It is relentless,” Guardiola added. Every single day, they are there, fighting for success, trying always to be better. They have been so, so resilient.” Guardiola landed his first league title at the Etihad a year after his debut in Etihad.
Guardiola’s latest success also means he has won three league titles in every division he has managed following his stills in La Liga with Barcelona and Bundesliga with Bayern Munich. “It is so important to say a huge thank you to all our fans. In our toughest moments, we couldn’t hear the crowd get behind us as usual, but we know they are with us everywhere we go and that has lifted us,” Guardiola said.
City unveiled a giant banner proclaiming “Champions” over the main entrance at the Etihad shortly after being confirmed as winners. Some fans headed to the club’s Etihad Stadium on to celebrate the title win. “I hope we can all celebrate together one day not too far away. It has been such a hard year for so many people. This one is really for our fans and for Colin Bell and all his family,” Guardiola added.
The club’s latest league title moves them on to seven in total, with Manchester United still out in front on 20. Manchester City have three league games remaining, against Newcastle, Brighton and Everton, before their first-ever Champions League final. “Rest assured we will continue to do everything we can to bring the Champions League home this season,” Guardiola said.
