Diogo Jota’s brace sent Liverpool to a 2-0 victory and booked a spot with Chelsea at Wembley in the EFL Cup final next month. The Reds, who last lifted the League Cup in 2012, are back in the final for the first time since 2016. Thomas Tuchel’s side ran out 3-0 aggregate winners over Tottenham in the other semi-final. “We scored two wonderful goals, Diogo Jota is on fire. We were completely convinced when he arrived at the club he would help us massively,” coach Jurgen Klopp said after the game. “Since he is here he has made another step, he has turned into a really world class striker.” It will be Klopp’s fifth cup final with Liverpool since he took charge in 2015.
Arsenal started very lively until Thomas Partey, who only returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, sent off just 16 minutes after coming off the bench after picking up two bookings. Liverpool displayed their attacking prowess, with Jota scoring his first in the 19th minute. The Portugal forward, once again benefitting from a Trent Alexander-Arnold pass, scored his second 13 minutes from the end.
“Quality is why we signed him because of the way he played at Wolves,” Klopp added. “The defending he had to do, the runs he had to make but was still able to produce some exciting stuff. He didn’t just step up tonight. Yes he scored two goals but he is incredibly important for us. The mix of his skillset is incredibly exciting.” Meanwhile, Arteta was left disappointed after the loss despite starting strong.
“It is disappointing because obviously when you have the final one game away you have that excitement,” Arteta said at a news conference after the game. “We did everything we could to put out a competitive team. They [Liverpool] have the quality to finish the game off. You need to have a squad of 22, 23 top outfield players and to do that, it takes time.”
It was Jota’s 14th goal of the season in all competitions. He has already beaten his overall record for last season. He has scored 27 goals in 57 games for the club, including 14 in all competitions this season. Earlier, Chelsea booked their spot in the Carabao Cup final after leading 2-0 from the first leg of their semi-final match against Tottenham.
