FIFA, world football’s governing body, has announced that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) will be suspended with immediate effect, citing “undue influence from third parties”. “The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes,” a FIFA statement read. The governing body added that the suspension will only be lifted if there will be amendments in the appointed committees. Online sports betting here!
“The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs,” the statement added. It is learnt that the AIFF has been governed by a Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) after relieving Praful Patel.
Patel served as the AIFF president for 12 years and according to India’s National Sports Code, the maximum term for a sports head is only three four-year terms. However, there was no election held for the post of AIFF president following Patel’s departure that prompted the Supreme Court to appoint a CoA. In June, the CoA met with FIFA and AFC to discuss the new AIFF constitution and election details.
Following conflicts between CoA and state football associations regarding the new AIFF constitution provisions, FIFA deemed the CoA to be interfering as a third party in the running of the AIFF that resulted in its suspension. According to FIFA rules, federations must be free from legal and political interference. India’s Supreme Court is expected to hold a hearing this week.
“It is unfortunate to see such a directive by FIFA during a time when all efforts were being made to put Indian Football back on the right track,” CoA chairman Justice (retd.) Anil Dave said. “That being said, we are constantly in talks with all the stakeholders, including FIFA, to find the correct solution to this situation, and get the ball rolling once again.”
