“Everton can confirm it has suspended a First-Team player pending a police investigation. The Club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statements at this time,” the statement read. The club also announced that the player, who was reportedly married, was suspended until the police investigation concludes.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) also confirmed in a statement that “arrested a 31-year-old man from the Bowdon area of Trafford on Friday 16 July 2021, on suspicion of child sex offences. He is on police bail pending further enquiries.” Meanwhile, the attorney general, Michael Ellis QC, has warned people to steer clear of spreading misinformation about the case on social media platforms.
“Everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and everyone deserves a fair trial,” Michael Ellis QC told a news agency. “A misjudged tweet or post could have grave repercussions and interfere with a trial. It could mean a trial is delayed or at worst stopped because a fair trial isn’t possible – so I would caution everyone, don’t get in the way of justice being done.”
It is learnt that the majority of the Everton players have returned to training two weeks ago in preparation for their new campaign under their new manager Rafa Benitez. They are expected to face Manchester United on August 7 in a warm-up before kicking off their Premier League season against Southampton a week later. Benitez is yet to release a statement regarding the incident.
This sex-related case is not new to the English league as former Manchester City, Sunderland and Middlesbrough player Adam Johnson was one of the most high-profile cases in the English topflight that was involved in an arrest after being charged with sexual activity with a 15-year-old supporter. The former England star was sacked by Sunderland and later went to jail for six years.
