Borussia Dortmund sacked head coach Lucien Favre following Stuttgart loss

Lucien Favre has been sacked as head coach of Borussia Dortmund, the Bundesliga club announced over the weekend. Lucien Favre became the first-ever manager to remain unbeaten through his first 15 Bundesliga matches with Borussia Dortmund when he took over in 2018. However, three consecutive losses, including the humiliating 5-1 defeat to Stuttgart at home ended his post.

“Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with head coach Lucien Favre. The club would like to thank Lucien for his dedication and wish him success in his future,” the club said on Twitter. Favre was appointed Dortmund boss in May 2018 and led the club to back-to-back second-place finishes in the Bundesliga. Currently, the Black and Yellow side dropped to fifth in the standings.

The 63-year-old veteran coach leaves Borussia Dortmund as the club’s joint highest performing Bundesliga coach, recording an average of 2.09 points per game, the same as Thomas Tuchel and significantly higher than Jürgen Klopp (1.91), Ottmar Hitzfeld (1.85) and Matthias Sammer (1.77). “It was a tough decision for us to take,” admitted Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc.

“We are all grateful to Lucien Favre for his excellent work over the past 2-1/2 years, in which he and his team won two runner-up championships. As a professional and as a person, Lucien Favre is beyond any doubt,” Dortmund chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke said in a statement. Favre is also a former Hertha Berlin, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Nice head coach.

Promoted Stuttgart scored three times in 10 minutes, with Silas Wamangituka fired a second successive Bundesliga brace. Dortmund’s consolation was when Raphael Guerreiro’s outstanding long ball was met by a world-class finish across Gregor Kobel by Gio Reyna as Dortmund drew level before the break. It was Stuttgart’s first win in Westphalia in 13 years.

Favre is leaving Dortmund after two-and-a-half years with a win percentage of 62% and the club in the Champions League knockout stages. Assistant coach Edin Terzic, the former assistant to West Brom boss Slaven Bilic, has been tasked with leading the first team for the rest of the 2020/2021 season. He will try to redeem Dortmund’s place in the Bundesliga when they travel to Werder Bremen next match.

Meanwhile, reigning champions Bayern Munich had to come from behind to earn a point in the stalemate finish against Union Berlin, who are sixth in the table. Bayern, who have now only won once in four league games, are ahead of RB Leipzig on goal difference. This was the fifth consecutive league game in which Bayern, the defending champions, had fallen behind.
