Spanish radio station COPE posted a video on Twitter showing a group of Atletico Madrid fans chanting outside the stadium: “You are a monkey, Vinicius, you are a monkey.” Last week, Pedro Bravo, the head of the Spanish Football Agents Association was also criticized by fans after making remarks about Vini’s dance celebration by saying that Vinicius must stop “monkeying around” when celebrating a goal. He immediately addressed the issue and made a public apology stating, “I want to clarify that the expression ‘playing the monkey’ which I misused to describe Vinicius’ goal celebration dance was employed metaphorically (‘to play the fool’),” Bravo wrote. “Since my intention was not to offend anyone, I sincerely apologize, I’m sorry,” he stated from a reliable news source.
Various Spanish local media outlets also reported racist and ridicule chants from fans including “Vinicius die”. Atletico Madrid did not respond nor entertain a request for a comment about the said incident but they posted on their social media page: “Support Atleti with passion and respect for opponents.”
Vinicius Jr got the last laugh as Real Madrid almost demolished Atletico with a 2-1 scoreline. Thanks to Rodrygo and Valverde early aggressive attacks on the defense of the home team and making the offense Real Madrid efficient in the first half and sufficient enough in the second half, limiting Atletico with just few looks and translating to only one goal by Atletico’s Mario Hermoso at the 83rd minute mark.
After the match, Vinicius posted a picture on his instagram account with the caption “Dance where you want”. Gabriel Jesus of Arsenal also made a statement about the dance celebration of Vinicius being dedicated to a friend.
Real Madrid Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois addresses the racism happened before the game in the turf of Atletico “There’s no room for racism, and it’s really bad that those chants happen and obviously, it can be a minority of fans but this is racism and we need to call it like it is,” Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said after the game. “I hope that someone can find out who those people are, there are cameras everywhere and some people don’t understand what they’re saying. That’s a problem. Like even for me, there’s nothing racist to me, but if you stand behind the goal and hear what I hear every game, it’s not nice and there are kids with their parents insulting me in the worst way,” he said from a popular sports article.
