Bayern Munich have won their 11th straight Bundesliga title in dramatic fashion, after Borussia Dortmund slipped up on the final day of the season. Dortmund went into the final matchday two points ahead of Bayern, but they could only draw 2-2 at home to Mainz, while Bayern won 2-1 away at Cologne. The result means that Bayern have now won the Bundesliga title for a record-extending 11 consecutive seasons.

“When Leroy [Sane] didn’t score, I thought that this game summed up the whole time I’ve been in charge and maybe also the whole season,” Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said. “But we showed a reaction again today. Jamal [Musiala] made another statement. It’s indescribable.” Bayern finished on 71 points, ahead on goal difference from Dortmund. Follow us for more soccer predictions and sports contents.

Going into the final day, both Bayern and Dortmund needed a win to clinch the title. Kingsley Coleman opened the lead for Bayern in the 8th minute before Dejan Ljubicic scored for an equalizer later in the game. Bayern midfielder Jamal Musiala scored in the 89th minute to break a 1–1 tie. Bayern held on to win the crown, as Dortmund, who would have won their first title since 2011-12 shared spoils with Mainz.

“I think anyone who’s interested in soccer, particularly German soccer, will say we don’t deserve it, and I understand, because our second half of the season was so chaotic, on the field, off the field,” Bayern veteran Thomas Müller said. “But this moment is still unbelievable for the group, that’s what will be remembered, it’s crazy.”

Bayern’s title win was not without its challenges this season. They lost their opening match of the season to Hoffenheim, and they also went on to lose to Borussia Mönchengladbach and Freiburg. However, Bayern always seemed to find a way to win when it mattered most. They won 19 of their last 21 matches of the season, and they scored an incredible 99 goals in the process.

Bayern’s success this season is a sign of their dominance in German football, and they show no signs of slowing down. They have now won the title 32 times in total, more than any other club in the history of the competition, and they have won the DFB-Pokal six times in the last seven years. They remain the best team in Germany by a long way, and they will be the favorites to win the title again next season.

Meanwhile, the success was overshadowed by several major German media reports claiming that club CEO Oliver Kahn, who was not in Cologne, and sports director Hasan Salihamdizic would leave the club shortly after the final whistle. The Bayern board is due to meet on May 30.

Elsewhere, Rani Khedira fired Union Berlin into the Champions League with a late winner over Werder Bremen for 1-0. They finished fourth, ahead of Freiburg, who lost 2-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt, and behind third-placed RB Leipzig. Schalke were relegated after a 4-2 loss at Leipzig, and VFB Stuttgart will contest the relegation/promotion playoff against the team that finishes third in the second tier.
