Barcelona win first La Liga title in four years

Barcelona have won their 27th La Liga title, and their first since 2018-19 season after a 4-2 victory over Espanyol on Sunday.

Barcelona have won their 27th La Liga title, and their first since 2018-19 season after a 4-2 victory over Espanyol on Sunday. The win capped off a remarkable turnaround for the Catalan club, who were struggling financially and on and off the pitch just a few years ago. The title is a major achievement for Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, who was appointed in November 2021.

“It’s a magnificent feeling, a feeling of job well done,” Barcelona coach Xavi said. “This is important to give the club’s project some stability. The league title shows that things have been done the right way and that we have to stay on this path.” Xavi won eight as a player with Barca and now this one as a manager. The title was clinched with four games remaining as Robert Lewandowski, who now scored 30 goals in 33 league appearances since joining from Bayern Munich, struck twice along with goals for Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde.  Javi Puado and Joselu pulled two late goals to give hosts a consolation. Celebrations at the RCDE Stadium were cut short as some Espanyol fans invaded the pitch towards Barcelona players.

Throughout the season, the Catalan giants has been particularly impressive in attack, scoring 76 goals in 33 league games. The defense has been solid at times, but it has also been exposed at times, particularly in the Champions League. Despite their defensive weaknesses, Barcelona have been too good for their rivals in La Liga this season. They have won 24 of their 33 league games, with just four defeats.

They have also scored 64 goals in 34 matches this season and conceded the fewest goals (13) in the league since Deportivo La Coruña (1993-94) and Atlético Madrid (2015-16) jointly held record of 18. The season started well for Barcelona, with the team winning their first six league games. However, they then went on a three-game losing streak, which put their title hopes in jeopardy.

However, Barcelona bounced back from their poor run of form and went on a winning streak. They won 10 of their next 11 games, which put them in a strong position to win the title. Barcelona then went on a run of three draws in four games, which allowed Real Madrid to close the gap on them. However, Barcelona responded by winning their last four games of the season, which secured them the title.

The title win is a major boost for Barca, who are hoping to return to the top of European football. They are also eyeing to re-sign their former talisman and current PSG star Lionel Messi, who helped them won titles since coming into the first team in 2004-05. Barcelona won eight league titles in 11 seasons through 2019. It finished second, then third in the following season. It was second to rivals Real Madrid last season.
