Mathew Leckie became Australia’s hero to claim a hard 1-0 victory over the European team. It was a bad tournament for Denmark, after just reaching the semi-finals of the Euro 2020, the team badly underperformed in Qatar and heading home with a winless mark on their head. Coming into the match, both teams were in danger of crashing out of the tournament after Tunisia pulled a shocker against reigning champions France. However, Mathew Leckie had another path wanted to take as he delivered a knockout blow in the 60th minute against the Danes as he made a superb solo attack to revisit their 2006 World Cup last 16 visit.
On the other hand, Denmark was shocked and offered little to no answer from that blow and they remained stagnant till the game-ending buzzer that saw themselves crash out of the tournament as World No.10. Now, Australia will face the favorite Argentina in the round of 16 and they were looking to prepare against this South American giant with Messi aiming for the World Cup trophy to add to his resume.
“I’m so proud of the effort by the boys. There was a short turnaround but their effort was incredible,” Australian Head Coach Arnold told reporters after the game. ‘A lot of belief and hard work. These boys come in with a great mindset. We’ve been working on this for the last four/four and a half years about the belief, the energy and the focus. I could see in their eyes, they were ready tonight.”
Leckie’ stunning and superb left-footed strike that made the Socceroos secure their slot to the round of 16 and extend their stay in Qatar. “As the ball was rolling in, I saw it goin in, I was so excited and so happy,” Leckie expressed after the match. “I’m just so proud. We’ve worked so hard. This is my third World Cup now and I’ve had my chances in previous World Cups to score, wasn’t meant to be.”
Despite the huge gap on the possession percentages with Denmark was miles ahead Australia, it does not mean a victory on their side as they failed tremendously of translating those chances but Australia had more accuracy and efficiency with Leckie doing it in the second-half, zagging the defense of Denmark with his super solo effort.
Australia’s coach Arnold was asked how the team would celebrate the victory. He responded by firmly saying “no celebration.”
“As I said to the boys, that’s why we won after a great win against Tunisia. No celebrations, no emotion. Sleep. No social media.
With these two victories of the Socceroos in the World Cup, Coach Arnold addressed to the media that this Australian might be the “new golden generation.”
“It’s the first time ever an Australian team won two games at a World Cup, in a row, maybe we’re talking about a new golden generation,” he said. “Because I’ve been listening and hearing about that golden generation of 2006, they got four points, and now we’ve got six, so maybe we’re talking about a new generation.”
France will book an all-out European clash with Poland, while Australia will face a giant in Argentina and will test if they are really the new golden generation of Australian football.
