Aston Villa soccer club have sacked manager Steven Gerrard after another Premier League defeat, extending their poor run at Fulham 3-0 that left them near the danger zone. The 42-year-old left Rangers to succeed Dean Smith as Villa manager in 2021, leading them to a 14th place finish last term. He only won 13 of 40 games during his 11 months in charge, including 2 games so far this season.

Gerrard left Villa in the 17th place of the table, level in points with Wolves above the danger zone. “I’m a fighter – it’s in my DNA. I’ll continue to fight unless I’m told differently.” Gerrard said in his last press conference at Villa Park, hours before the announcement of his departure. The Birmingham club is reportedly eyeing the likes of ex-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and ex-Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel.
Elsewhere, Bundesliga side Schalke also announced that they have parted ways with coach Frank Kramer following the team’s 5-1 defeat to Hoffenheim in the German Cup. Kramer took over from interim coach Mike Buesken, who led Schalke to top flight promotion after winning the second division last season. However, the team have won just once in their opening 10 games and sit in 17th place.
“After achieving promotion last season, our goal for the new campaign was to remain in the Bundesliga. Until recently we were convinced that we could turn things around with the current coaching setup, but from our point of view, we’ve now reached a point in time that we have to make a change,” sporting director Rouven Schroder said. Kramer is the third Bundesliga coach to be sacked this season.
Earlier, Ligue 1 outfit Montpellier have dismissed coach Olivier Dall’Oglio, becoming the fifth boss in the French top flight to be fired this month alone, with Lyon, Auxerre, Brest and Reims firing their managers in the last eight days. Dall’Oglio led Montpellier to 13th-placed finish in his first season in charge before opening the new campaign with only four wins in 11 games, losing 4 of their last 5 league games.
