The news drops as Argentina gears up to host the Under-20 World Cup, stepping in for Indonesia, which had to forego its hosting duties earlier this year over internal disagreement related to Israel’s participation.
The forthcoming friendly holds particular significance as it comes only eight months after Indonesia tragically witnessed one of the deadliest stadium stampedes in history. The mishap resulted in 135 people losing their lives in East Java’s city of Malang.
Although football fever runs high among Indonesia’s 270 million citizens, the national team has had a hard time replicating the global success it tasted back in 1938, when it made its debut as the Dutch East Indies. However, Indonesian fans are currently in celebration mode, having recently clinched the gold at the South East Asian Games for the first time since 1991.
Erick Thohir, the Indonesian Football Association’s chief, optimistically remarked, “This friendly match with Argentina could be just what Indonesian football needs to keep its momentum going.”
According to Thohir, the visit isn’t connected to Argentina stepping in for Indonesia in hosting the youth tournament, but is a sign of the “mutual cooperation” between the two countries. Javier Zanetti, Inter’s former Argentine defender, also played a part in bringing the match together.
Football aficionados might recall the last time Argentina and Indonesia met on the field during the World Youth Championship in Japan, back in 1979. Football legend Diego Maradona graced that match, which Argentina comfortably won 5-0.
An interesting twist to the story is that Lionel Messi might be giving the Indonesian friendly a miss, based on local Argentine news. Messi, it appears, plans to rest up before joining his new team, Inter Miami. So, while Messi may feature in Argentina’s match against Australia, he will likely sit out the Indonesian leg.
“The Albiceleste are using these friendly matches as groundwork for their 2026 World Cup Qualifiers,” reported Vermouth Deportivo, an Argentine news site. The matches in June will serve as Argentina’s testing ground, first against Australia in Beijing and then against Indonesia.
Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, reportedly has plans to manage his players’ fatigue effectively across these two games. Big names like Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and Angel Di Maria will take the pitch against Australia. The intention is not just to give the star players some rest but also to test the mettle of new faces in the Argentina squad. After all, the big showdown – the 2026 World Cup qualifiers – begins in September.
