The year 2022 broke a lot of news that shocked sports, especially football. From live football match score and fixtures to the World Cup, last year was really full. Here is a recap of what the year 2022 looked like in football.
Russia stripped off hosting, participating in international games
As part of the sanctions over invasion of Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA banned Russia from the 2022 men’s World Cup and UEFA competitions. The UEFA has earlier stripped Russia’s hosting rights for the Champions League final. Earlier, UEFA barred Russia’s bid to host the men’s Euro in both 2028 and 2032. Real Madrid clinched the 2022 Champions League title
Real Madrid beat Liverpool 0-1 to win the European Cup for the record-extending 14th time – their eighth in the Champions League era. Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior scored the only goal of the final, while Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois was named as Man of the Match after making a record of nine saves, including effort from Liverpool forwards Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt clinched first Europa League title in 42 years after beating Rangers in the final.
Italy missed a spot in the World Cup
European champions Italy will miss the 2022 World Cup after being stunned by North Macedonia in their play-off in Palermo. It’s a huge blow for the Azzurri as they have failed to qualify for a second consecutive World Cup apart from failing to reach a World Cup knockout match since winning the tournament in 2006. Aleksander Trajkovski’s late goal was North Macedonia’s key to knock out the four-time World Cup champions from the 2022 edition of the tournament.
Wolves announced 12BET as new sleeve sponsor
In the launching of the new kit design, English Premier League (EPL) mainstay club Wolverhampton Wanderers has announced online betting company 12BET as its sleeve sponsor for the 2022-23 season. The online bookmaker 12Bet replaced Bitci as Wolves’ sleeve partner and the announcement came after the club ended its association with fellow betting firm. 12BET’s logo will appear on the sleeves of all Wolves’ jerseys from the 2022/23 season.
Haaland completed Manchester City move
Erling Haaland completed his move to the Premier League champions Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund. The 21-year-old striker inks a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium. Last month, City confirmed that they topped the race to sign the Norwegian star, beating the likes of Barcelona in the process. Haaland is one of the most prolific goalscorers to date, netting 86 times in 89 appearances for Dortmund. He also scored 23 goals in 19 Champions League appearances for Dortmund and RB Salzburg.
Lewandowski ended Bayern contract
After winning the tenth Bundesliga title, Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowki confirmed departure with the German champions to move to Barcelona. Lewandowski, who had just one year remaining on his Bayern contract, signed a three-year contract, which contains an option for a further 12 months. Lewandowski has scored 344 goals in 375 appearances across all competitions since moving to Bayern in 2014. He won eight Bundesliga titles and one Champions League with Bayern.

Romelu Lukaku completed his return to Inter Milan on season-loan after a flop Chelsea comeback. The Belgium international scored 8 goals in 26 matches during his second spell at Stamford Bridge, signing a club-record £97.5 million ($135 million). Few months later, Chelsea sacked head coach Thomas Tuchel following the team’s loss to Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 in the Champions League opener, their third consecutive away loss and the first under the German coach.
